Description

SYOSSET, NY — Voters in Syosset took to the polls on Tuesday and approved the school district's proposed 2021-22 budget. But voters sent a mixed-message on a series of propositions to accept and upgrade a portion of the Stillwell Property that would be given by Nassau County. The budget passed easily, 2,017 to 973. Proposition 2, which accepted the gift of a portion of the Stillwell Preserve from the county, just barely passed, with 1,488 voting yes and 1,475 voting no. However, Proposition 3, which would authorize spending to improve the property, was defeated 1,526 to 1,437. The proposition would have allowed up to $10.5 million to be spent on the property, with $3 million coming from the county, $2 million coming from reserves and the remaining $5.5 million coming from bonds. Propositions 2 and 3 were a package — because Proposition 3 failed, the entire Stillwell Preserve motion was defeated. In addition to the budget and the Stillwell Preserve proposition, voters also cast their ballots for three Board of Education seats. There were six candidates running for the seats in an at-large election. Incumbent Shany Park was returned to her seat, earning 1,704 votes. The other seats were won by Brian Grieco and Lisa Coscia, who earned 1,664 and 1,391 votes, respectively.
