The City of Fraser seeks a Department of Public Works Water and Sewer Laborer. About the Opportunity Under the supervision of the Public Works Supervisor, performs a variety of work activities relating to the City of Fraser’s Public Works Department and difficulty. May work independently or as a part of a DPW crew. Starting pay rate: $24.81 per hour. Job Duties: Maintains city water main systems. Repairs broken water mains using repair clamps or replacement of sections of water main. Repairs gate valves and valve boxes that are used to isolate sections of main in the event of a break or repair. Assists operators in excavation of mains and the location of underground utilities. Performs water service line hookups, such as wet or dry tapping service lines into the main connecting service lines and installing shutoff devices. Also repairs damaged water lines and saddles. Maintains a record of stop box locations, types of repairs to broken mains, and job sire repairs. Maintains city sanitary sewer systems by performing routine cleaning to prevent blockage in mains, unplugging clogged mains using high pressure Vactor, and cleaning and maintaining sanitary sewer manholes. As part of a crew, assists in the excavation and installation of new water main pipe, valves, and gate well housings. Also assists in the installation of fire hydrants. Maintains and repairs fire hydrants throughout the city. Checks hydrants for leaks when shut off or hydrants that are malfunctioning when in use. May remove hydrant out of the ground for the replacement of internal parts and replace on completion. Keep records or repairs for supervisors and the fire department. As part of a crew, maintains all sewer and storm water pump stations in good operating condition and performs basic maintenance procedures while down in the pump station. Maintains records of confined space entry and oxygen levels before entering for supervision. Cuts, trims, and removes trees and branches, chips brush and grinds stumps. Mows, trims, and edges grass at city owned properties. Dye testing on commercial buildings and residential homes. Locate underground water lines. Repair Catch basins for storm and sewer systems. Laborer must have S4 water license by completion of first year. S-3 by third year. Must know how to read blueprints for city infrastructure. Removes and hauls out old concrete, forming an area for new concrete; pours and finishes cement for sidewalks, driveway approaches, and sections of street. Additionally, mixes cement/mortar for smaller jobs such as repairing catch basins and manholes. Repair’s city excavation sites using topsoil, laying sod, or planting grass seed to return site to original form. Assists in snow removal during the winter by using a shovel or a snow-blower for sidewalks on city property. Drives a plow truck to plow municipal building parking lots, dead-end streets, cul-de-sacs, and courts. Repairs city streets using asphalt (cold patch) for potholes. Fills cracks in asphalt using hot tar. Repairs shoulders of roads using slag. Installs new signs and sign poles for streets and stop signs. Replaces old signs. A minimum of 6 months to one year of construction maintenance experience or the equivalent. Possession of a valid Michigan Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) B License with tanker and airbrakes endorsements. Must be able to work in confined spaces. Must not have any fear of heights. Must be able to work in unfavorable extreme weather conditions. Must be able to be on call and work emergency overtime in all hours of the night, weekends, and holidays. “The qualifications listed above are guidelines.
