INTERSECTIONS: DISABILITY, GENDER, AND RACE...KIMBERLÉ CRENSHAW, TONI MORRISON, AND MORE NOTAFLOF - NO ONE TURNED AWAY FOR LACK OF FUNDS Suggested donation: $99 In this course, we will will analyze how disability serves to exacerbate and magnify the marginalization and discrimination that results from other forms of oppression, including sexism, racism, and bias against people with LGBQTIA+ identities. We will consider how disability has been used as a rationale even (sometimes especially) within progressive movements to justify marginalization. We will begin with close readings and in-depth discussion of sources created by women of color to illuminate these justifications and to develop a vision of a more inclusive world. Our sources will include work by Kimberlé Crenshaw, Audre Lorde, Mia Mingus, and Toni Morrison. We will discuss how the fields of feminism and disability studies have colluded with and reinforced white supremacist culture, and how the voices of people of color must be central to these disciplines. The goal of this course is for participants to develop deep knowledge of the work of scholars, activists, and artists who widen the aperture on our views of who belongs in the world. Equity Intersection is an equity and justice education non-profit. We offer adult education courses on all elements of equity, including disability. We believe education is action. Our courses address race, gender and LGBTQ+ status. A unique feature of Equity Intersection is our focus on ableism and disability justice. We believe that a focus on disability strengthens our understanding of all forms of inequity, and so builds empathy, agency and community.
