“Students are butterflies trapped in a cocoon."
This is a sentiment that echoes throughout the documentary #MoreThanAcademics. The documentary features vignettes of New York City middle school students whose voices have been suppressed by an overfocus on test scores. Teacher and producer Dejinay Reed takes the audience on her classes' journey to develop their social and emotional skills while meeting rigorous academic expectations. Together, she and her students go beyond their academics. They nurture and repair love with their families, develop entrepreneurial skills, and express their views on our education system. The film also includes the voices of activists working to transform the American educational system. Most of all, #MoreThanAcademics provides a platform and a safe place for students to say what they need from their homes, schools, and communities. In this documentary, students express what they need to feel seen and heard.
