Press release from Austin ISD - Announcement: May 18, 2021 By Scott Thomas Austin ISD leaders encouraged students ages 12 and older and their families to get vaccinated because masks will become optional after June 4 per the governor's executive order issued Tuesday, May 18. Masks are mandatory for all Austin ISD staff and students until June 4. Following that, the district is encouraging anyone who isn't vaccinated to wear a mask for their safety for those around them. "We know masks prevent COVID-19 from spreading, and there is nothing in the Governor's order that forbids people from wearing masks. It only means we cannot require them," Austin ISD Superintendent Stephanie Elizalde. "We encourage everyone to use their common sense and continue to follow advice from scientists when it comes to protecting themselves from the coronavirus." While masks continue to be important, the best way for students and staff to protect themselves is by getting vaccinated, officials said. "With the school year ending, vaccines available to 12-16 year olds now and the summer to address vaccine hesitancy, we have a pathway forward to ensure the best interests of our students, parents, teachers, staff and the community," said AISD Board President Geronimo Rodriguez.
