PLEASANTON, CA — Valerie Arkin and Jack Balch were leading in the race to serve on the Pleasanton City Council as of Wednesday morning. Arkin, a Pleasanton Unified School District board member, received 24% of the vote (7,814 votes), and Balch, a certified public accountant, received 22% of the vote (7,252 votes) as of 11 p.m., with all 18 precincts reporting. They were among seven candidates who vied to fill two open seats on the Pleasanton City Council, including: Nancy Allen, businesswoman (21%); Randy Brown, businessman 11%); Zarina Kiziloglu, student life coordinator (9%); and Chiman Lee, businessman. The county said it must still tally an unspecified number of mailed ballots. Councilmembers Karla Brown and Jerry Pentin, whose terms are expiring, declined to seek another term as both are running to serve the city as mayor. Elections officials described a peaceful and efficient day at the polls Tuesday, as Election Day 2020 has progressed smoothly in the Bay Area's nine counties. Alameda County reported Monday about 581,445 people cast votes before Election Day, which is 60.2 percent of its registered voters. "Things are going well," said Tim Dupuis, Alameda County's registrar. "A little more in-person voting than we saw over the weekend. It still looks like the majority of the votes are being dropped off as vote-by-mail." Turnout for in-person voting is down, thanks to the massive push for early and mail-in voting due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The night before Election Day, more than 2.7 million Bay Area voters had already cast ballots. Statewide, more than 11.2 million of California's more than 21 million registered voters had already voted.
