Description

Purgatory Chasm Military/Veteran Family-Friendly Hike. Sutton, MA Join us for a military/veteran family-friendly hike through Purgatory Chasm in Sutton, MA. A unique natural landmark, Purgatory Chasm runs for a quarter of a mile between granite walls rising as high as 70 feet. Popular with picnickers and rock-climbers alike, the Chasm is believed to have its origin in the sudden release of dammed-up glacial meltwater near the end of the last Ice Age, approximately 14,000 years ago. Photos below are from our last hike in the chasm. We’ll walk the main loop trail (approximately a half mile) to ensure that everybody who wants to explore some of the rock formations, such as “Fat Man’s Misery” (always the most popular), doesn’t pass it by unknowingly. Read about the Legend of Purgatory Chasm at https://newengland.com/today/travel/massachusetts/the-legend-of-purgatory-chasm/ . Details: Cold water and snacks will be available after the hike. As a state park, there is a $5 parking fee for those without a parking pass or other exemption. Ticket kiosks available at multiple locations throughout the parking lot. We’ll meet by the pavilion near the main chasm trailhead (if occupied, we’ll meet between the pavilion and the trail head…organizer(s) will be wearing the LiVE MassVeteran.com olive-colored t-shirt). This hike involves extremely uneven terrain that involves frequent stepping up and down from large rock formations. Participate at your own risk based on your own ability level. This hike is sponsored by Easterseals Massachusetts’ MassVeteran.com, a resource for veterans in Massachusetts, built by veterans in Massachusetts. This site is live while it’s being constructed.
