How Baker Lifting Mask Mandate Affects Falmouth Schools

FALMOUTH, MA — Gov. Charlie Baker ordered the mask mandate and other coronavirus restrictions to end May 29, but what does that mean for Falmouth Public Schools? Although Baker's order still requires masks be worn inside schools, school districts, including Falmouth saw some of their mask restrictions relaxed. "Falmouth Public Schools will follow the guidance," Superintendent Lori Duerr said. "Beginning today (Tuesday), students will no longer have to wear masks when outdoors, (e.g., recess, physical education, and outdoor learning environments) even if distancing cannot be maintained." The lifting of the mask mandate also affects outdoor high school sports. The Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association on Tuesday morning said it will follow new guidelines from the state's Executive Office of Energy and Environment Affairs and allow both competitors and fans of outdoor events to ditch the face masks as of Tuesday afternoon's contests. The new rules apply to spring sports teams that play outdoors only. When indoors playing what are considered moderate- or high-risk sports because of close contact — such as boys volleyball — athletes, coaches, fans and officials must continue to mask up through the end of the school year. Indoor athletes in low-risk sports that can allow for 14 feet of distancing — such as gymnastics — do not need to wear masks while competing. All of Falmouth's spring sports are outdoors and won't be affected unless they practice inside. Duerr said masks are also still required on school buses for students and staff.
