NEW YORK CITY — Andrew Giuliani — the son of former New York City mayor Rudy Giuliani — officially launched a campaign to become the state's next governor. "Lots of exciting times over here, we're looking forward to saving our state," he said in a Twitter video announcing his bid. Giuliani (@AndrewHGiuliani) May 18, 2021 Giuliani's bid could set up the 2022 race for New York governor as a contest between the two scions of political dynasties. Gov. Andrew Cuomo, the son of former Gov. Mario Cuomo, is likely to run for a fourth term. But his road to re-election could be rough as he deals with the fallout of a scandal over his handling of nursing home deaths in the coronavirus pandemic and an ongoing probe over numerous sexual harassment accusations. And the Giuliani name has also lost its luster. Rudy Giuliani, once hailed post-9/11 as "America's mayor," is now widely mocked as a lackey for former President Donald Trump. His actions in Ukraine help prompt Trump's first impeachment and apparently are the subject of a criminal investigation. He also spread thoroughly debunked claims that the 2020 election — in which Trump handily and legitimately lost — was beset by fraud. Amid the scandals surrounding his father, Andrew Giuliani has emerged as a contributor. He too worked for the former president, albeit with a lower profile as Trump's official "sports liaison." Giuliani, if he wins the governorship, would be the first Republican leading the state since George Pataki who was governor until 2007.
