HARLEM, NY — Six Harlem colleges and universities were among the institutions that were granted millions of dollars as part of the federal stimulus plan that passed in March, a lawmaker said on Thursday. U.S. Rep. Adriano Espaillat, who represents Upper Manhattan and the South Bronx, announced the 10 schools in his district that received a combined $111 million through the American Rescue Plan — the $1.9 million stimulus signed into law by President Joe Biden on March 11. The funding will help local institutions deal with the financial distress caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, with over half of the funding going to students as emergency financial aid. Here are the Harlem colleges and universities that got federal funding: CUNY – City College of New York: $47,591,088Helene Fuld School of Nursing: $1,436,551Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai: $820,437Jewish Theological Seminary of America: $273,641Manhattan School of Music: $1,194,831 New York College of Podiatric Medicine: $262,966 "It has been over a year since students and families around the country have had their lives and education upended by the COVID-19 pandemic," Espaillat said in a news release. " Millions of students had to adapt to a whole new world of learning – teachers, administrators, and school employees alike have worked tirelessly to support our children during this time of great uncertainty – and now it's our job to ensure that they have the resources they need to reopen their schools safely."
