Rescued Long Island Ducklings Get Police Escort To Nearby Pond

GLEN COVE, NY — It was a traffic-stopping moment that left a lot to quack about. Nine ducklings that were found trapped in a storm drain in the rear parking lot of a Long Island police station were rescued and then given a special police escort to the more suitable aquatic surroundings of a nearby pond. The fuzzy young offspring became stranded in a drain behind Glen Cove Police Department Headquarters at about 6 p.m., and no matter how much their "momma" tried coaxing them out, they still could not free themselves, according to Det. Lt. John Nagle. "Thankfully for the baby ducks, officers of the Glen Cove Police Department and members of Volunteers for Wildlife intervened to help reunite the family," Nagle said, adding that in a "joint effort, the ducks were scooped out of the sewer drain and placed in a plastic box." Officers then shut traffic down as the ducks were carried in the box from police headquarters, followed by their mother, who was keeping a close eye, through town to Mill Pond, which is adjacent to the Glen Cove Firehouse. Traffic had to be shut down because she "refused to let her babies out of her sight and followed the officers and volunteers very closely," Nagle said. "Once the officers and volunteers made it safely to the pond the family was happily reunited," he added.
