EDMONDS, WA — A monthslong investigation that began in Edmonds in January ended more than 3,000 miles away over the weekend, when the suspect was captured as he tried to escape the country by sea, police announced Tuesday. According to the Edmonds Police Department, an Edmonds mother contacted investigators earlier this year, reporting that her ex-boyfriend had sexually abused her children, ages 11 and 13. Detectives assigned to the case developed probable cause to arrest a 34-year-old Edmonds man on suspicion of second-degree child rape and first-degree child molestation, police said. As the police department's criminal unit searched for the man to make an arrest, investigators learned he had left Washington state for Florida, intending to flee the United States by boat. On Sunday, a U.S. Marshals team in Florida found the man on a boat off the coast of Florida and took him into custody with assistance from the Lee County Sheriff, police said. Once the man was transferred to the county jail, police said he participated in an interview with a local detective and Edmonds detective Stacie Trykar, who joined remotely. During that interview, detectives said the man admitted to several things in the case. He now awaits an extradition hearing to be sent back to Washington state. Edmonds police said the investigation remains active, and detectives are working to determine if there may be additional victims.
