Placerville & Sacramento Valley Railroad We need your help! We are all volunteers, and there are jobs for all levels of skill and experience. Placerville & Sacramento Valley Railroad is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to preserving California’s rich railroad history. Our mission is to protect, preserve, and develop the Folsom-Placerville railroad right-of-way, celebrating its legacy through the creation and operation of a sustainable community heritage railroad for the benefit, use, education, and enjoyment of the public. We operate scenic train excursions and motorcar rides year-round over 15 miles of track between Folsom and Latrobe on Southern Pacific Railroad’s historic Placerville Branch in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada mountains of northern California. Our base of operation in in Folsom with volunteer workdays scheduled on Wednesday, Thursday, Saturday, and Sunday. Volunteers at our railroad vary in age from 16 to 78, working on projects such as: Maintenance and refurbishment of the train car fleet Commissary – Selling or serving food & beverages to our train passengers. Brush Cutting – cutting small trees and brush away from tracks. Docent - Ride our trains providing information to passengers on a variety of subjects such as history of our railroad, history of our railroad equipment, and many other topics. Maintenance-of-Way - volunteers who repair and maintain the existing track and structures. Painting, striping paint and sanding surfaces Electrical work Teamster – Driving trailers loaded with supplies or equipment to the needed locations. Cleaning and organizing Welding. Mechanic - routine maintenance and repair of equipment from lawn mowers to locomotives. Equipment Operator – uses a variety of track maintenance equipment, forklifts, bobcats, and more. Ticket Agent - Passengers come to buy tickets to ride the train and ask questions about departure times and events. Wear a smile and engage in conversations with the passengers. Train Crew - Men and women who are volunteer engineers, firemen, brakemen, and conductors that run and carry out the required operations of the trains and locomotives. Engineers and fireman - operate and control the steam and diesel locomotives. Brakemen - perform all operational duties on the train – coupling, uncoupling, moving the cars and locomotives, operating track switches. Conductors - oversee and coordinate all train crew actions for safe and efficient operations. Accountants, lawyers, web designers, coordinators, we need everyone’s skills.
