Description

The Local Concert Series continues with a special spring concert. Amazing singer songwriter M Horton Smith and Bluegrass Band Quicksand Soup will be making a special appearance at Carolyn's Garden Venue to help keep Local Music alive! A limited audience of 30 will be allowed to purchase tickets for this concert. Please read the guidelines below before purchasing a ticket for in person attendance. Hailing from the high-desert basin of the Great Salt Lake, Americana folk singer M Horton Smith’s EP, Silver Tongued Devil, and LP, Blessed Of The Flesh have marked a heartfelt expression to what those in the local Utah music scene have been witness to for the past several years: Smith’s fusing of a personal brand of Americana, folk and gospel lyricism with timeless fiddle-tune-like melodies. Smith’s candid songwriting style and overall musical ideology can perhaps be described as complexity within simplicity, striking a similar wavelength to such artists as Leonard Cohen, Guy Clark, or Townes Van Zandt. As a solo performer, as well as the guitarist/mandolinist for The Hollering Pines and the folk group The Lower Lights, Smith’s career has taken him to stages all across the U.S., including the Americana Music Festival in Nashville, and the Red Wing Roots Music Festival in Virginia. Quicksand Soup is a high-energy, alternative sweetgrass band based in Moab, Utah. Led by acclaimed songwriter Sand Sheff, Quicksand Soup features top-notch instrumental talent and catchy, unique songs. They are a five-piece band who often plays around a single mike (making them one of the easiest sound set-ups around). Quicksand Soup is known for a mix of original and old-time selections with an emphasis on showing audiences a great time. They’re also known to play the late-night bluegrass party set, and then deliver hard-core gospel early on Sunday morning. In 2019, Quicksand Soup released four simultaneous CD’s, showcasing the band’s repertoire of country, western, bluegrass, gospel and original music. Songwriter Sheff was Arizona-born and Oklahoma-raised. He has released 15 albums of original music, including in Nashville and Austin. Sand has shared the stage with everyone from Ryan Adams to Ramblin’ Jack Elliot; he’s even opened for Phish! His music has been compared to “an evening of high-octane cactus juice around a campfire with Lyle Lovett, Gram Parsons and Pink Floyd” (JC Shephard – Last.fm and Roots Music Report). Mr. Sheff was also a featured performer at the 2018 National Cowboy Poetry Gathering and he has performed everywhere from campfires to Carnegie Hall. Lead guitarist David Steward is one of the most versatile pickers in the Rocky Mountains, performing jazz, honky-tonk and rock and roll, and has several albums of original music. He also yodels fantastically, though, unfortunately, not frequently. Eric Jones, mandolinist, was raised in Dinosaur, Colorado, was a founding member of Big Timbre and is an American musical historian as well as a much sought-after singer and picker. Moab born and raised Alan Snow was the lead bass player for the world-famous Caleb Chapman Super Band (jazz) and traveled the world, where he got the opportunity to perform with such jazz luminaries as Branford Marsalis. Upstate New York raised Fiddler Tamara Frieda. She is one of the great string talents of the Four Corners area, and she also performs with the San Juan Symphony and Phoenix Opera Orchestra. This show will also be livestreamed on IAMA Face Book Live and The IAMA YouTube Channel for FREE!
