Help us plant trees at an accessible playground in Downers Grove and enable this inclusive space to live up to its full potential! Although playgrounds can be found throughout the Chicago area, few consciously consider the needs of children with different abilities. By incorporating features that make playgrounds safe and accessible for all, the Lester Community playground enables children of different abilities to freely play with one another, fostering confidence, mutual understanding, and a spirit of inclusion. While the playground provides a unique opportunity for interaction among children with different abilities and backgrounds, there is a noticeable lack of tree cover in the area (see rendering above). This lack of tree canopy and associated shade could impede the ability of children and their families to completely utilize the playground in certain weather conditions, and limit the full potential of this unique, inclusive space. Adding 16 trees to the new playground will provide much-needed shade in the summer months, keeping the equipment cool and creating an attractive, comfortable space for children and their families to gather on hot sunny days. Although this is a free event, advance sign-up is required. Children must be supervised by their caregiver at all times. Participants will be required to wear a mask throughout the event, regardless of vaccination status. Please wear closed-toe shoes and long pants, and bring a (full) water bottle, snacks, and sunblock. We will take care of the rest! We hope you will join us!
