Tewksbury Fire Puts Out Five-Acre Brush Fire

TEWKSBURY, MA — Tewksbury firefighters put out a five-acre brush fire Sunday afternoon. "Thick black smoke" from the fire could be seen rising behind Wamesit Lanes. Firefighters received a call about the smoke around 2:20 p.m. Sunday. "It took them a couple of hours to knock down all the fire and the hot spots, because it's been dry out," Deputy Chief Albert Vasas said. The fire was cleared around 6 p.m., Vasas said. The full on-duty shift fought the fire, while off-duty firefighters and Andover Fire covered the fire stations. There were no injuries and there was no property damage, Vasas said. "The guys worked very, very hard and contained it to a small area, relatively speaking," he added. "If it jumped the tracks it would've gotten into the great swamp and that would've been a real burdensome fire."
