Swampscott Hits 70% Residents With At Least 1 Vaccine Dose

SWAMPSCOTT, MA —With 70 percent of town residents having received at least one dose of a coronavirus vaccine, Swampscott residents are ahead of the strong regional rates that Gov. Charlie Baker said on Monday will allow the state to remove all virus-related business restrictions as of May 29. "We've crossed a big milestone this week," Swampscott officials said late Monday afternoon. "Fifty percent of all residents in the 10 North Shore communities that make up the Coalition for a Safe Summer are now fully vaccinated and 62 percent have received their first dose. "In Swampscott, 70 percent of our residents have received their first dose of the vaccine." Vaccinations are available for all those 12 years old and older with the Pfizer vaccine at the Salem State vaccination site. The state will also lift the need for face coverings when playing outdoor youth sports and being outside of schools for recess as of Tuesday, as well as relax restrictions on touching common items at schools such as books or toys. One thing that has not yet changed is face coverings when it comes to high school sports. Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association spokesperson Tara Bennett told Patch the MIAA Board of Directions is working with the state on new guidelines, but for at least the time being the rules surrounding school sports have not changed.
