WINTER HAVEN, FL — Polk County residents can learn protection skills against a gunman in the upcoming free "Surviving An Active Assailant" training in Winter Haven. The Polk County Sheriff's Office is offering the 2-hour course at the Sheriff's Operation Center. Participants will learn how to prepare for, prevent and respond to an active shooter at a church, school or business. The "Run, Hide, Fight," training model will be taught, including tactics and strategies of what to do when law enforcement arrives, deputies said. Officers will discuss the potential role of Florida concealed weapons license holders and the legal justification of "lethal engagement" with an active assailant.
