BROOKFIELD, WI — Amy Zientek, a physics, biology and ecology teacher at Brookfield Academy, is among six Wisconsin teachers who placed as finalists for the 2021 Presidential Awards for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching (PAEMST.) The finalists will be judged at the national level for winning positions in mathematics and science.
Zientek has taught at Brookfield Academy since August of 2020 and is a three time alum at the University of Wisconsin - Milwaukee. In an interview with UW-Milwaukee, Zientek shared her experience as a teacher dealing with virtual learning during the COVID-19 pandemic.
"Teaching in the wake of COVID-19 was a challenge for me," said Zientek to UWM. "Virtual learning pushed me to rethink how to facilitate student learning of standards, and how to prepare my Advanced Placement students for a new version of the exam."
According to the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction, one winner in mathematics and one winner in science will receive a $10,000 award from the National Science Foundation and professional development opportunities, along with an award ceremony in Washington, D.C. The award recognizes K-12 science, technology, engineering, mathematics and computer science teachers across the nation.
