BROCKTON, MA — The two boys who drowned in Waldo Lake at D.W. Field Park in Brockton Saturday evening have been identified, said Plymouth County District Attorney Timothy J. Cruz in a news release Sunday. Police responded to reports of a medical emergency and possible drowning at the park at approximately 7:30 p.m., said Cruz. They determined that two children had gone under the water and could not be located despite multiple rescue attempts. The Plymouth County Technical Rescue Team was called to the scene and located the body of 13-year-old Rafael Andrade of Brockton around 8:51 p.m. At approximately 9:33 p.m., divers located the second victim, 12-year-old Tiago Depina of Brockton. The boys were taken to Good Samaritan hospital, where they were pronounced dead. Police say a preliminary investigation suggests that the two victims were skipping rocks in shallow water when one fell in and the other attempted to rescue him. Several family members and witnesses tried to save them, but were unsuccessful. The two boys were cousins and did not know how to swim, said police. No foul play is suspected.
