BOSTON — The state's capital will reopen along with the rest of Massachusetts, Acting Mayor Kim Janey announced Monday afternoon. Janey spoke just hours after Gov. Charlie Baker said Massachusetts will drop all remaining COVID-19 restrictions and its mask mandate on May 29. "But, let me be clear, our battle against COVID is not over," Janey said. "Reopening our city will only work if we all continue to do our part to fight the pandemic." Boston had maintained a more conservative approach in general matters of reopening, adopting statewide changes a few weeks after they took effect elsewhere. Some of Janey's opponents in the mayoral race have been critical of what they say is an overly cautious approach. But Janey's announcement means it's likely many of Boston's signature summer events — full Red Sox games, rocking concerts, North End street festivals — will be back sooner than later.
