STAMFORD, CT — An attempted carjacking on Sunday in Stamford led to the arrest of a 22-year-old man who injured an officer as he was placed in handcuffs. The incident began shortly before 5 p.m. Sunday when a 26-year-old woman was in her car at a traffic light at Washington Boulevard and Station Place. She saw a man, later identified as 22-year-old Alecc Porfirio, walking nearby. "[She said] it looked like the man needed help. As [Porfirio] got closer, he opened up her rear door, threw his bags inside, and then got inside," said Sgt. Steven Perrotta of the Stamford Police Department on Monday. "He started to grab her shoulders and climb into the front seat. She turned the car off and took her keys and ran out of the car." Perrotta praised the woman for her quick-thinking. "It's certainly a smart decision to get out of a violent situation. The securing of her properties was certainly less important than her safety," he said. Perrotta said that Porfirio began to "destroy the car" by kicking the interior. Porfirio then fled on foot, and a description was given to police who were able to locate him within the area. "As the police tried to arrest him, he fought with them and bit at least one officer," said Perrotta, who did not have an update Monday on the officer. Porfirio told police that he was homeless. He was charged with third-degree burglary, second-degree criminal attempt at larceny, criminal attempt at robbery involving an occupied motor vehicle, assault on a police officer, interfering with police, breach of peace, and second-degree criminal mischief. Porfirio's bond was set at $50,000.
