Your Arlington Published: 14 May 2021 Written by Susan Gilbert It's spring, the pandemic here is abating and we're eager to venture out. At 6 p.m. Thursday, May 20, explore Arlington's historic Center, including several artistic and historical gems. The one-hour walking tour starts at the Dallin Art Museum, 611 Mass. Ave., the yellow building behind Whittemore Park (pictured here). This local treasure is a hallmark to artist and former Arlington resident, Cyrus Dallin. During the tour, you will experience two of Dallin's most masterful public sculptures: Menotomy Hunter and Robbins Memorial Flagstaff. Metered parking is available in the lot behind the building, off Mystic Street. Please wear a face mask. Andrew Jay, Dallin Art Museum board member and former Arlington resident, will then lead you to, and describe, several additional highlights: Uncle Sam Memorial Statue (1976) ― Commemorates Samuel Wilson, the original Uncle Sam, near his birthplace here in town. Soldiers and Sailors Monument (1887) ― Dedicated to those who served in the Civil War. Arlington Co-operative Bank (1934) ― Unique example of Art Deco architecture. Robbins Library (1807) ―Vital community center, listed on the National Registry of Historic Places. Town Hall (1913) ― Elegant edifice, seat of town government.
