JERSEY CITY, NJ — A protected bike lane is coming to the rest of Hoboken Avenue. The year's first protected bike lane will extend the current lanes on 18th street up the hill on Hoboken Avenue, ending at Rt. 139. The city's goal is for the bike lanes to connect Heights with Downtown and Hoboken. In 2020, Jersey City started a rollout of protected bike lanes throughout the city using planters, curbs, parked cars, or bollards to physically separate and protect bicyclists from passing traffic in the right-of-way. The city completed 6.7 miles of protected bike lanes and has 2.7 miles planned. Jersey City was recently ranked in the top 50 cities for bicycle safety by YourLocalSecurity. The city has bee prioritizing cycling and alternative means of transportation including a new unification of the Citi Bike program with Hoboken. Jersey City will add two new Citi Bike stations in Greenville in the first 60 days of the new partnership with Hoboken, after hearing a need from local riders. The city is also looking into bringing eScooters to Jersey City to offer more transportation options.
