JOLIET, IL — A 20-year-old Joliet resident who lives in the 200 block of Hunter Avenue was arrested Thursday night after police say he had a loaded handgun with a defaced serial number in his possession.
Joliet police arrested Omar Turner on charges of aggravated unlawful use of a weapon, unlawful possession of ammunition, defacing firearm identification markings, No FOID and marijuana possession.
The incident happened around 8:25 p.m. when Joliet police were called to the 800 block of Clement Street for a report of a suspicious vehicle parked in the street.
"As officers approached, it appeared that the occupants in the vehicle were attempting to conceal an item," Joliet police reports show. "While speaking to the occupants, officers detected an odor of burnt cannabis coming from within the vehicle."
Joliet police made everyone step outside so officers could search the vehicle for evidence.
"Officers recovered a loaded handgun on the floorboard under Turner's seat," Joliet police reports state. "Turner was placed into custody without incident. Officers recovered a small amount of cannabis from Turner after a search was conducted. Further inspection of the firearm revealed that the gun's serial number had been defaced."
Turner was booked into the Will County Jail and on Friday night, he was released from custody after posting 10 percent of his $30,000 bail, jail records show.
