MARTINEZ, CA — Firefighters contained a wind-driven vegetation fire Monday afternoon on Waterbird Way in Martinez but crews were expected to remain on scene for extensive mop-up, the Contra Costa County Fire Protection District said. The Waterbird Fire was reported at 2:27 p.m. Monday in the vicinity of Waterbird Way, north of Interstate Highway 680. The fire was initially reported to be an estimated two acres in size with a moderate rate of wind-driven spread. Within about an hour, Con Fire had the blaze contained but asked the public to avoid the area so firefighters and other first responders had unimpeded access. "Waterbird Way vegetation fire in Martinez has been extinguished," Con Fire said in a tweet sent at 3:25 p.m. "Extensive mop up underway. Though temperatures have cooled, fire danger remains high, exacerbated by windy conditions. Please use caution in all outdoor activities and report fires immediately to 911." Con Fire responding to a 2nd alarm vegetation fire in vicinity of Waterbird Way, north of I680 in Martinez at this hour. Fire is reported at approximately two acres with moderate, wind-driven spread.
