NEW YORK, NY — The New York City Marathon is returning in 2021 after a year hiatus due to the coronavirus pandemic. Governor Andrew Cuomo announced Monday that the world's biggest marathon will take place on Nov. 7 for its 50th running. The race will have 33,000 runners instead of its usual 55,000 — 60 percent capacity — but Cuomo said these numbers could change as restrictions continue to get dropped in the coming months. Registration for the 2021 New York City Marathon will open on June 8. "The marathon is back and that is a great, great New York event that excites people from all across the globe, and does a lot of great work for the city and state of New York," Cuomo said. New York Road Runners, the organization that oversees the famed marathon predicted earlier in 2021 that the race would take place this year without revealing other details. The race kicks off on the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge in Staten Island and weaves through 26.2 miles of the five boroughs before ending in Central Park.
