ROOSEVELT ISLAND, NY — A 21-year-old person died on Sunday after suffering a possible medical episode while swimming in a public pool on Roosevelt Island.
Authorities responded around 5:21 p.m. Sunday to the Sportspark Pool for reports of a "drowning/cardiac arrest," an FDNY spokesperson said.
The unidentified person was rushed to Mount Sinai Queens Medical Center, where they were pronounced dead, according to a statement by Shelton Haynes, the president and CEO of the Roosevelt Island Operating Corporation.
The pool remained closed Monday morning, according to the Roosevelt Islander blog. Haynes said the RIOC was "working in full support of an investigation being conducted by the NYPD and the Medical Examiner's office.
"Additionally, an internal review is being conducted by RIOC to learn and understand the facts surrounding this devastating incident," Haynes said. "During this time, the thoughts, prayers, and condolences of everyone at RIOC are with the family, friends, and loved ones of this young person."
