The duck that broke my heart.

Description

So I live on this property in Nipomo. The owners of the property keep some chickens and a couple ducks here and it's my first time living with such. Unless the grocery store stops selling eggs, it's probably my last. At first, I could sleep thru the rooster crows when they started at 3:45 in the morning, but now, not so much. There are two roosters here (which I've heard isn't supposed be good) and maybe 5 hens. The roosters running around like they are kings, hens not far behind, scratching and clucking. The two ducks on the other hand, bring a smile to my face when I see them waddle in a circle around each other in some genetically programmed dance. Always together whether it's laying under the tree in the afternoon shade or early morning searching for something to eat. And until night before last, I could feel the bond between them. But something happened in the middle of the night and I woke up yesterday morning minus one duck. Which is sad, but it's just a duck, right?! I normally wouldn't have given it much thought, it's a duck, and Nipomo has predators. The end. But this other duck...man... To see it waddle around lost and lonely. To hear the emptiness in it's quacks. And to actually pick up on how sad this duck has become...wow..it breaks my heart.. Anyone know any duck psychology?
