The NC PPC Cultural Arts Committee Presents: 'The Cookout' A Celebration in Honor of Juneteenth The North Carolina Poor People's Campaign Cultural Arts Committee is proud to present 'The Cookout' A Celebration in Honor of Juneteenth on June 26, 2021 from 11:00 AM - 4:00 PM at The Unity Center of Peace. Juneteenth is the oldest nationally celebrated holiday commemorating the true ending of slavery in the United States. It was on June 19, 1865 that the Union soldiers, led by Major General Gordon Granger, landed at Galveston, Texas with news that the remainder of the enslaved were now free and the war had ended. Juneteenth celebrates the end of one of Americas darkest historical periods and the amazing resiliency of Africa-Americans in America and the incredible contributions they have made since that time .
