2 Chicago Police Officers Shot In Lawndale, Authorities Say

CHICAGO, IL — Two Chicago police officers were hospitalized Sunday after they were shot on the city's West Side. The shooting happened around 7:20 a.m. after officers responded to a ShotSpotter alert in the 1400 block of South Lawndale Avenue, Chicago Police Superintendent David Brown said during a news conference on Sunday. Officers spotted a person in a vacant alley who turned and opened fire, striking them both, authorities said. Both officers were taken to Mt. Sinai Hospital following the shooting, Chicago police spokesman Tom Ahern confirmed on Twitter. One officer was struck in the shoulder and leg, Brown said. The other officer was shot in the hand. Both officers are stable, recovering and in good condition, Brown added. A male suspect was also shot and hospitalized following the altercation. The shooting marks the fifth and sixth time Chicago officers have been shot since January 2021. Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot said the shooting "underscores the danger that our men and women in the police department face every single day." "They run to danger to protect us, and we can't forget that," Lightfoot said. "Let's say a prayer for all involved. Let's pray for peace in our city."
