Walking tour through the hamlet of Staatsburg exploring the connection between the Mills' estate and the village
Follow Staatsburgh staff outside the estate walls for a guided walking tour of the hamlet of Staatsburg. Visiting several historic locations and using period photographs, this walking tour will focused on Staatsburg's storied history and its close connection to the Staatsburgh estate– note the different spellings, the village dropped the final “H” in the 1890s!
Staatsburgh, the Gilded Age home of Ruth and Ogden Mills, has always had a close relationship with the nearby hamlet of Staatsburg. The Hudson River estate was an industry in itself – providing steady employment for generations of local families. In return, Ruth, Ogden, and their children gave back to their adopted home-community. At the turn of the century, the hamlet of Staatsburg was a thriving hub of businesses and manufacturing, fueled by these landed estates and the modernizing nation.
Led by site interpretive staff, this 90-minute tour through the center of Staatsburg will begin at the Staatsburg Library (70 Old Post Rd, Staatsburg NY) and follow a circuit through the hamlet for about a mile. The tour will be mostly level terrain, with some uphill walking. The event will be canceled in the event of heavy rain or excessive heat. Please wear comfortable shoes, a hat for sun, and bring water - also, a mask is required.
PLEASE NOTE: Staatsburgh follows all NYS Department of Health guidelines for safety during the COVID 19 pandemic. Masks and social distancing will be required of all tour participants until these guidelines are lifted by New York State Parks.
