PORT WASHINGTON, NY — The North Shore Animal League America in Port Washington is opening its doors on Saturday to over 40 small breed dogs and puppies that were rescued from the Midwest in the first rescue of its kind since early 2020. before the COVID-19 pandemic struck. Rescue organizers estimate the dogs will arrive sometime between 11 a.m. and 12 p.m., according to a news release. The dogs, which include a variety of pure and mixed breeds, were rescued in a collaboration with National Mill Dog Rescue, and once they are "medically and behaviorally assessed" by a veterinarian team, they'll be groomed, according to rescue organizers. Adoptions are subject to pre-approval, rescue organizers said. In a statement, organization officials said: "As COVID-19 travel and safety restrictions are lifted and vaccines are more readily available, we look forward to resuming our life-saving mission by continuing to work with National Mill Dog Rescue and bring these often neglected animals into our care in order to find them loving, responsible homes."
