I have several Kryptonite locks for which I have lost the keys. I also have a key or two that don’t match any of the locks I own and I am sure there are others out there in the same situation. You can always buy new keys from Kryptonite if you know which ones you need. The problem is there is no easy way to get that information unless you spend a lot of money and send the lock to Kryptonite. Let’s do something about it!
I would like to start collecting lockless keys so that I can help people find the ones that match their locks that they lost the keys. Once I have enough keys people can bring their locks over and hopefully find the one that matches so they can order a replacement.
I told someone I wanted to do this and they said it sounded like I was trying to collect a bunch of keys so I could steal bikes. Honestly, I think it would be a lot faster to just cut the locks than try key after key and hopefully unlock the lock before the owner came back. Rest assured, I promise I am not going to do that or help anyone else do that either.
I had suggested this as a service to Kryptonite and it went ignored. Probably because they make a lot more money now when people lose their keys than if they were to offer an cheap and easy key replacement solution.
Let me know if you are interested in helping by donating your old lockless keys, or even keyless locks that you are planning to throw away and that I might eventually find a key match for. Also, Let me know if have some ideas on how this could work better.
Thanks,
Tom
