Paid Research $20/hr - The Role of Cerebellum in Speech Study

Jobs

505 Parnassus Ave, San Francisco CA

Description

Are you interested in how your brain functions? The Speech Neuroscience Lab (SNL) and the Biomagnetic Imaging Lab (BIL) at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) are investigating how certain areas of your brain, particularly the cerebellum, function. We aim to accomplish this by using a technique called Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS). What is TMS? TMS uses magnetic fields to painlessly stimulate a portion of your brain. A coil that rests on the scalp produces a very brief magnetic field that passes painlessly through the skull, stimulating the targeted brain area. The TMS machine is approved as an investigational device by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). TMS has been used extensively in research and has no known long-term risks. Study Visits: - 1st Visit: You will have an MRI scan at the Mission Bay campus of UCSF. - Subsequent Visits: You will complete speech tasks on a computer at the beginning and end of each visit. SNL/BIL researchers will use the TMS device to stimulate areas of your brain to map out where brain functions occur. These visits occur at the Parnassus Heights campus of UCSF. - We would like for participants to commit to 2-7 TMS visits. You can complete as many or as few sessions as you would like. Who can participate? Participants must: - Be between ages 18 and 75 - Be native or primary English speakers - Have no history of speech or hearing disorders - Have no history of diagnosed neurological or psychiatric conditions, including epilepsy Will I benefit from my participation? While you will not directly benefit from participating, the information you provide will be invaluable in advancing our understanding of brain functions and informing new treatments for brain disorders. In addition, to show our appreciation for your time and effort we will also compensate you for the time spent with us at a rate of $20/hour. We can also validate your parking if you choose to drive to your visits. Contact Information: If you are interested in participating, please email me with your full name, age, and email address. You will be emailed with a recruitment survey to fill out. You can also email me with any questions about the research or call our lab at (415) 476-6888. Thank you!
