AUSTIN, TX — Austin ISD students, who are attending in-person classes, will no longer need to wear a mask when spending time outside, officials announced Wednesday. Wednesday's decision comes a few weeks before the district school year ends and end-of-year ceremonies take place in June outdoors. Officials said the changes were announced after the district saw vaccination rates rise and infections fall. Based of the relaxed restrictions, students can keep their masks off outside, including during recess, as long as physical distance is maintained. Other changes include the length of quarantine exposure. Students or staff members who need to quarantine because of a potential exposure will be required to isolate for 10 days now instead of 14. The school district said these changes are in compliance with guidelines from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Austin ISD is continuing to host vaccination clinics across the city. They do not require an appointment and are available for students, staff and family members who are 16 years old or older. For more information, visit www.austinisd.org.
