AUSTIN, TX — A 6-year-old leukemia survivor will help the Texas Department of Transportation finish imploding the I-35/U.S. 183 flyover in Austin on Saturday, officials said. TxDOT announced Thursday it has partnered with the Make-A-Wish Foundation to give the boy the opportunity to help crews implode a remaining portion of the flyover that will be rebuilt in a course of four months. The boom is expected at 6 a.m. Saturday, and all lanes of I-35 and U.S. 183 interchange will be closed for two hours while the implosion takes place, officials said. Crews have been working to implode the stretch of road for the past couple of weeks and begun the first phase last week. While the flyover is closed for reconstruction, northbound I-35 drivers wishing to access northbound U.S. Hwy. 183 will use the Rundberg Lane exit (#241) and take the non-signalized U-turn at Rundberg Lane to access the newly opened southbound I-35 to northbound US 183 flyover. Once completed, the extended flyover will lower the grade and accommodate a northbound bypass lane for St. John's Avenue. Road signs have been placed to alert drivers of the upcoming closures. TxDOT asks the traveling public to be patient and remain aware when traveling through the work zone. To learn more about this project, visit My35Construction.org.
