BERKELEY, CA — The suspect in a gas station robbery last month has been charged according to the Berkeley Police Department. Officers at around 7:15 on April 22 responded to a report of an armed robbery at the Chevron station at 1500 University Ave., police said. The clerk told police the suspect entered the store and pulled out a gun demanding cash, police said. Fearing that he could be hurt, the clerk gave the suspect the money from the cash register and the suspect walked out to a pickup truck and drove-off according to police. Alameda County Regional Auto Theft Task Force officers on April 26 found the suspect asleep inside a truck that had been reported stolen and arrested him, police said. The county task force officers notified Berkeley police that the suspect was in possession of a truck that matched the description of a vehicle tied to the robbery, Officer Byron White told Patch. Berkeley police had issued a "be on the lookout" alert on the truck, distinctive in appearance, to neighboring agencies, White said. BPD detectives determined that the suspect was same one who robbed the gas station, police said. On April 27 the Alameda County District Attorney's Office charged the suspect, identified as a 61-year-old man with no known address, with robbery and unlawfully taking a vehicle as well as several criminal enhancements, police said.
