BERKELEY, CA — Members of a program that aims to help those living in encampments last week helped lead police to the arrest of a domestic violence suspect and a drug bust, the Berkeley Police Department said. Community Services Bureau officers at around 10 a.m. on May 5 were accompanying Public Works and Neighborhood Services staffers conducting outreach and helping with clean up at Berkeley encampments when the staffers noticed an altercation in a tent on Shattuck Avenue near downtown, police said. Officers separated the parties involved in what they determined was a domestic violence in progress, police said. The altercation began when a man accused the female victim of stealing $700 from him according to police. The suspect, a 43-year-old man, was arrested on suspicion of domestic violence battery causing visible injury, police said. During a search he was found to be in possession of 43 grams of methamphetamine and was also arrested on suspicion of possession of a controlled substance with intent to distribute, police said.
