Help get the Poison Hemlock out of our beautiful uptown!
Poison hemlock is a noxious weed that spreads quickly. It can be found in many places around Port Townsend and Beaver Valley Road. It is toxic to humans and animals, even after the plant has died. It is invasive and aggressive, and crowds out native plants, pastures, and stream banks.
It has spread along Washington Street, an easy location for many people to encounter it. Cars and foot traffic can pick up and spread the seeds to new places. If we can pull it before it seeds, it will give other plants a chance to grow instead. Let's improve our local ecosystem by getting it out!
Meet in the Post Office parking lot. Bring digging tools, hand pruners, or loppers. Poison hemlock has many look-alikes, and the Program Assistant will show you how to tell it apart.
CAUTION: ALL PARTS OF THIS PLANT ARE TOXIC! It is highly poisonous when eaten, but can also irritate the skin and lungs. Masks and sturdy gloves are required. Please wear long sleeves and pants. You will be required to sign a waiver before the event.
Event will be rescheduled if the weather does not permit. For any additional questions, please contact the Program Assistant at [email protected]
COVID-19 precautions: Limited to 50 people. Maintain a 6ft distance from others whenever possible. Hand sanitizer will be available. Please do not attend if you, or someone you've had close contact with, has tested positive for COVID-19 in the last 14 days.
