FRAMINGHAM, MA — Framingham Mayor Yvonne Spicer launched her 2021 campaign on Thursday, and is entering a reelection year with close to $30,000 in her campaign coffers. Although Spicer was quiet about her 2021 plans until this week, she's been accepting contributions since she took office in 2018. She began 2020 with about $11,000 in her campaign account, and held key fundraisers in July and December 2020 to boost her to near the $30,000 mark. With campaign season underway, Patch dug into Spicer's fundraising efforts since January 2020 to find out where in the state and nation her donations are coming from. Most of her supporters live in Framingham, but Spicer is well known outside the city — she made appearances around the state to support Joe Kennedy during his U.S. Senate bid in 2020, and has strong connections with other Black and Democratic elected officials in Massachusetts and beyond. About 83 percent of Spicer's donations since January 2020 have come from inside Massachusetts, but she drew donations from residents of 19 other states and Washington, DC. She received a healthy number from Boston (Roslindale, Roxbury, Hyde Park, Dorchester and Jamaica Plain included), and then small groups spread across the state from Quincy to as far west as Northampton and Springfield. The average donation across all sources was $112. Most donations were under $100 at 231 compared to 141 above $100, according to state records.
