BELLMORE, NY — Lights, cameras, action! The Bellmore-Merrick Broadcasting team placed second in the Student Television Network Spring Nationals for the Live Sports Broadcast category, the school district announced in a news release. They won specifically for their April 14 coverage of a Senior Night girls volleyball match. BMB broadcast engineer Matt Russell was honored with an individual award for the entire program. "When we cover a sporting event, it is so much more than just the commentators," he said in a statement via the news release. Treating it as a professional endeavor, each telecast is done with four camera operators, four camera assistants and a technical director. Russell also said they two people handling the replays and someone else in charge of the graphics and statistics. "We are beyond excited for the kids for this accomplishment as the Student Television Network is a national organization including schools with long standing and prestigious broadcasting departments," broadcasting instructor Stu Stein said in a statement. Bellmore-Merrick Broadcasting is only in its fifth year, a stat that is not overlooked by senior AJ Fried. "To even be in the conversation with these prestigious STN programs is an honor for us," Fried said. "I'm so excited to see what the juniors and sophomores do next year."
