Troy Hofer Elementary School P.E. teacher Dani Novack put together a special activity for her remote-learning students during this year of Covid-19 that she also used later in the year for her in-person students. The activity was cardio-drumming, in which the students used whatever they had, such as kitchen spoons and upside-down bowls at home, and drumsticks and desktops at school, to percuss out the beat along with their teacher and a video musician. Novack said the students have loved rocking along with the music. It's been a fun way to give them a break from sitting, she said. "They particularly like it because it's something they've never done before," she said. "Our Specials Team of P.E., music, art and library are good about going above and beyond, especially this year. We have really supported each other exploring activities that can work in the classroom and remotely at the same time." In addition to drumming on desktops, Hofer's cardio-drumming activities involve squatting, clapping, tapping the floor, tapping knees, running in place, jumping jacks, and playing air guitar.
