GWINNETT COUNTY, GA — Georgians have gotten used to Amazon delivering just about anything you can imagine. But it's not every day that Amazon delivers a scholarship.
That's how Sierra Frisbee of Braselton received her $40,000 Amazon Future Engineer scholarship earlier this month — carried by one of Amazon's electric Scout units during a lunchtime ceremony at the Gwinnett School of Mathematics, Science and Technology (GSMST) in Lawrenceville.
Frisbee, a senior at the Gwinnett STEM high school, is one of 100 nationwide to receive this scholarship in 2021, according to an Amazon news release. In addition to paying $40,000 over four years for her college education, the scholarship comes with a paid internship at Amazon after her freshman year. Frisbee plans to study computer science this fall at Harvard College.
Frisbee already been selected as GSMST's Career and Technical Education Student of the Year, and she was selected as a finalist for the same honor at the county level for her studies in computer science and robotics.
"Sierra has been a wonderful student to watch grow," said Laura Gray, the GSMST teacher who nominated her. "She is enthusiastic, inquisitive, independent, and intelligent, but what stands out most of all is her unbridled passion to engineer ways to always be helping others."
Frisbee is one of five Amazon Future Engineer scholarship winners this year from Georgia, and one of two from Gwinnett County. Yoanna Turura, a senior at Grayson High School, also won an Amazon scholarship.
