Description
I am an intermediate level blues oriented keyboardist trying to expand into jazz and seeking a mentor/teacher that can help me with some specific things that I would like to improve in my playing. I'm mostly self taught, aside from some lessons as a kid, but can sight read lead sheets fairly fluently. I am pretty good at self directed practice, but feel like at this point in my development I could really benefit from some expert advice.
My biggest weak spots/areas to improve would be left hand comping(voicings, rhythms), voice leading techniques in general, harmonic/rhythmic counterpoint. I've also developed some bad habits from blues/pop/rock playing that I'm trying to break out of: hoping for some ideas on this too.
My biggest jazz influence is far and away Bill Evans, but also really admire Herbie Hancock, McCoy Tyner, Bud Powell, and Oscar Peterson. Insights into the particular techniques/styles of these artists and help with understanding/emulating them is something I'm very interested to learn. I'm not so much looking for a proper piano teacher either per se, or on-going regular lessons, but maybe someone to get with every few months or a couple times a year. Would travel as far as TC...
