June 19, 1865, also known as Juneteenth, "Freedom Day" or "Emancipation Day." commemorates the end of slavery for the then enslaved African Americans in Galveston, Texas. Since Juneteenth was not declared a national holiday, in the 1870s, church members raised $800 to purchase ten acres of land to create Emancipation Park. In this park, Juneteenth events are hosted in modern-day Houston. However, the news that slavery had ended came two and a half years later, after Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation. So that makes Juneteenth the longest-running African American holiday. Juneteenth is celebrated all through the United States by families in their backyards. Some cities such as Washington and Atlanta hold more significant events such as parades and festivals to celebrate this day. However, since Major General Gordon Granger landed in Galveston, Texas, with the news that the war had ended and that the enslaved were now free, this city has been marked a busy Juneteenth celebration site. This city holds more notable events such as musical performances and even a beauty contest that all begin the first week of June. But towns throughout the country enjoy community-wide barbecues and block parties. Juneteenth is a day to highlight the resilience, solidarity, and culture of the Black community. However, the core of this holiday remains unchanged; family, food, and community.
