PARK SLOPE, BROOKLYN — Plunging coronavirus rates in Park Slope dipped below 1 percent this week, again marking the neighborhood as the lowest positivity rate in the borough, data shows. Both of the two ZIP codes that cover Park Slope had less than a 1 percent seven-day coronavirus positivity rate as of Wednesday after hovering between 1 and 2 percent the last few weeks, city data shows. The northern 11217 ZIP had the lowest rate at 0.56 percent and the larger 11215 ZIP code stood at 0.85 percent, according to the data. The low rates are the latest milestone for the neighborhood, which has consistently had some of the lowest coronavirus rates in both Brooklyn and across New York City. They also come as New York City's overall coronavirus rate continues its steady decline as New Yorkers get their vaccines. The citywide seven-day average dipped below 2 percent for the first time in months just this week. In Park Slope, nearly three-quarters of residents over the age of 18 had gotten at least their first shot as of Wednesday. The 11215 ZIP code had 71 percent of residents partially vaccinated and 67 percent were partially vaccinated in 11217. The neighborhood was one of the first in Brooklyn to reach a 50-percent full vaccination rate. The high rates, like many wealthy, majority-white ZIP codes, are far higher than other parts of the borough, where only about a third of residents have gotten their first shot. The disparity underscores the struggle the state and city have had to fulfill their goal of reaching neighborhoods hardest-hit by the coronavirus pandemic with vaccines.
