NEW YORK CITY — The city's drive to convince hesitant New Yorkers to get the coronavirus vaccine has a growing side effect: free stuff. Gift cards to the city's public markets and Chelsea Market are in the offing for people who roll up their sleeves for shots, Mayor Bill de Blasio announced Wednesday. There's more to come, he said. "We're going to be rolling out more and more incentives, all different kinds for every kind of New Yorker because we want everyone to become part of this," he said. The city so far administered 7.23 million doses in its inoculation effort — a total that surpasses the populations of most states in the nation. But officials, as have their counterparts across the country, have seen demand fall sharply behind supply. Hence, incentives have started to roll out from the city's government headed by de Blasio and the state as a whole, led by Gov. Andrew Cuomo. De Blasio said the latest batch of incentives are in part made possible by Google. The tech giant sponsored the Chelsea Market gift card, he said.
