CONCORD, MA — Three Concord seniors earned a $2,500 scholarship from the National Merit Scholarship Corporation. The NMSC judges high school students based on their PSATs, and awards a number of scholarships in their senior year.
Rachel Dettelbach (Concord-Carlisle Regional High School), Sofia Garcia (Phillips Academy in Andover), and Kexuan Hong (Concord Academy) were awarded this year. Hong plans to study biochemistry, Garcia plans to study public policy, and Dettelbach is undecided.
The NMSC announced corporate scholarship winners in April. Phoebe Shudt of Concord won and received funding from Raytheon Company, which specializes in technology, mission systems integration.
Winners of the college-sponsored scholarships will be announced on June 2 and July 12.
"National Merit $2500 Scholarship winners are the Finalists in each state judged to have the strongest combination of accomplishments, skills, and potential for success in rigorous college studies," the announcement says. "The number of winners named in each state is proportional to the state's percentage of the nation's graduating high school seniors."
