HICKSVILLE, NY —Nassau County and Indian-American community leaders jointly announced a Long Island aid campaign to assist Covid-stricken India. Business leaders, community organization leaders and politicians held a news conference on Monday announcing the efforts. The COVID-19 crisis in India has led to the nation's healthcare systems becoming overwhelmed. Two days ago the country recorded over 4,000 deaths in one day. Nassau County Legislature Presiding Officer Richard Nicolello and Heath Committee Chair and Legislator Rose Marie Walker were on hand Monday in Hicksville at a Sikh prayer center to call attention to the aid campaign, raising funds for ventilators, personal protective equipment, medical supplies, and vaccinations for stricken India. Hicksville is one of the fastest-growing South Asian communities in the state. Nicolello said at the news conference that "We know that we must do something. We must help our brothers and sisters in India." The president of the Association of Indians in America, which is headquartered in Oyster Bay also urged Americans to pitch in. "Please help India during this difficult time and save the largest democracy on this earth," Dr. Urmilesh Arya said on Monday.
